Guide: Creating a Bucket and IAM User in Dell ObjectScale

This guide explains how to create a bucket and an IAM user in Dell ObjectScale 4.0. It is intended for advanced users and walks through the individual steps using the ObjectScale UI (OBS UI).

1. (Optional) Create Namespace

• Create a new namespace if needed.
• Take note of the namespace root user.

2. Configure Namespace

• Enable the desired options. We recommend activating ADO (Access During Outage) for Object Lock if you understand and can manage the associated risks. In TSO (Temporary Site Outage) scenarios, access is often required.

3. Create Bucket

• Navigate to Buckets and select the previously created namespace.
• Create a new bucket. Use the namespace root user as the owner in the following format: root@@namespace_name.

Important Settings:

• No default retention period configured (this can be changed later).

• No optional settings selected.

• Save the bucket.

4. Create IAM User

a) Create Policy

• Go to IAM User Management and select the namespace.

• Create a new policy:
  • Visit https://www.backup.ch/s3-iam-policy-generator.
  • Enter the bucket name and select the desired policy.
  • Copy the generated policy to your clipboard.

In the OBS UI:

• Paste the copied policy into the JSON editor.

• Note: Some policies (e.g., Governance policies) include settings that cannot be displayed in the visual editor. Always use the JSON editor.
• Hit next and save the policy.

b) Create User

• Return to the user management section.
• Create a new user and attach the previously created policy.
• Configure boundary settings as needed.

Attention: Be sure to save the Access Key and Secret Key immediately after creation. This is the only time they will be visible.

5. Test Connectivity

• Use any S3-compatible client (e.g., Cyberduck or s3browser).
• Test the connection using the newly created credentials.
• Configure a minimal lifecycle policy to delete uncompleted multipart uploads and expired object delete markers.
