The 3-2-1 Backup Rule

A solid backup concept is often based on the well-known «3-2-1 Rule». We'll show you what it's all about and how easily you can implement it.

What is the 3-2-1 Backup Rule?

The 3-2-1 backup rule provides the following backup strategy:

3: Three copies of all critical data

  1. The first copy is the original file you work with
  2. The second copy is the local backup, e.g., on a USB storage device
  3. The third copy is the cloud backup, which ensures geographical separation and increased security.

2: Two different media/storage devices

  • Don't create the local backup on the internal system drive; instead, use a separate (external or internal) storage device.

1: One copy of the data should be stored at a geographically separate location (offsite)

  • This is where cloud backup comes into play, as it can ensure geographical separation and higher security. The geographical separation ensures that data remains recoverable in case of water damage, fire damage, theft, or loss on the client side, and the security measures in cloud data centers like ours guarantee even greater protection against malware and hacker attacks.

With Backup ONE you can follow this rule using hybrid backup software

With the Backup ONE desktop client, you can define different backup destinations. For example, a complete system backup can be created to a local destination such as a USB hard drive or NAS device, while folders containing the most important data (tax records, accounting, etc.) are additionally backed up to the cloud. This happens completely automatically.
