What is S3 Storage?

S3 is the modern object storage format that continues to see unrestricted growth worldwide. There are good reasons for this. On one hand, S3 stores files as so-called objects (hence object storage), which are internally stored in a flat hierarchy within a namespace. This enables nearly unlimited scalability, as the namespace simply grows with the required storage capacity. Additionally, S3 objects can be tagged with custom metadata (unlike most conventional file systems) which can be queried directly via the S3 protocol. This allows search queries across billions of objects to be answered by the metadata server within seconds, which would otherwise be impossible. Furthermore, objects are not just stored on a single drive, but are split into chunks and protected using Erasure Coding so that even if a chunk is potentially lost, it can be recalculated using parity information. This provides massively increased data security.

What is Swiss S3 Storage?

Swiss S3 is Swiss cloud storage based on the Backup ONE Swiss Cloud. This means that S3 objects are stored in highly secure Backup ONE data centers. The options Single Site and Geo Redundant are available. In the geo-redundant variant, all S3 objects are automatically replicated between the two data centers via dedicated, encrypted inter-DC link. The data centers are located in Zurich (Tier-IV) and Geneva (Tier-III) and meet the highest security requirements
