Hybrid Backup – What Is It?

Hybrid backups are on everyone's lips today. But what does this actually mean?

A hybrid backup stands for data backup to both cloud and local destinations

A hybrid backup solution offers the advantage that users no longer have to choose between backing up to the cloud or to local destinations, as both are now possible simultaneously.

We distinguish between two variants of hybrid backup

• Backup to cloud and local destinations independently
• Backup to local destinations and automatic replication to the cloud (more on this below)

With the ability to automatically mirror a local backup to the cloud, more complex backup strategies can be executed without additional effort, as the software itself handles the synchronization of local backups to the cloud and also performs validation to ensure that both backups contain exactly the same data.

Thanks to hybrid backup, the 3-2-1 backup rule can also be followed without additional effort, which provides for 3 copies of data on 2 destinations with one offsite backup (usually cloud servers).

How to activate the replication of local backups to the cloud in the Backup ONE software

• Log in to your customer account at www.backup.ch/login
• Click on the "Manage Backups" button on the left
• Select the machine and the corresponding backup plan. Note: The backup plan must save the backup to a local (not cloud) destination for replication to be activated.
• Activate the "Replicate Backup" option
  
• Set how long the replicated backups should be retained
• Done – Your backups will now be automatically replicated to the cloud!

By replicating your backups to the cloud, data security and thus the probability that all data can be fully restored is more than doubled. This is because Backup ONE's cloud servers ensure both hardware and software redundancy of all data, thus guaranteeing extremely high availability.
