Since 2012

FileSync was founded in 2012 by the managing directors of Backup ONE AG. At that time, it didn't have features like highly secure data storage in certified Swiss Tier-IV/-III data centers, which is now one of FileSync's key selling points. There were also no resellers or real B2B customers at that time.

When in 2013, Edward Snowden, probably the most famous whistleblower in world history, revealed that the NSA was spying on tens of millions of internet users daily and even former German Chancellor Angela Merkel (DIE ZEIT) was affected, it triggered a scandal of unimaginable proportions. Providers like Dropbox and others fell into disrepute. This was for the simple reason that nobody really knew where the data uploaded and stored in the cloud was exactly located and who had access to it.

Headlines like 'Swiss Alternatives to Dropbox' (PcTipp) rightfully adorned the front pages of Swiss IT portals and magazines. FileSync was repeatedly listed among the various providers, and so everything took its course. Today, FileSync is part of Backup ONE AG and legally no longer the former FileSync GmbH.

What FileSync Offers

The solution comes in two variations, one for teams, one for individual users. The differences lie in the number of users and available storage space. FileSync for individual users starts at CHF 9.90 per month with 100 GB storage, and FileSync for teams starts at CHF 39.90 per month with 512 GB storage. Both storage space and number of users can be expanded as needed.

The individual user package is thus the private storage solution for synchronizing personal data between all devices, including sharing capabilities via link for friends and relatives, while the teams package is suitable as secure data storage for companies, associations, and organizations with individual permissions per user. Sharing & Synchronization

With the cloud storage, data can be securely synchronized between all end devices and accessed from anywhere. The only requirement is a Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android device. Files can also be shared with other people (such as business partners, friends, or customers, etc.) with just one click.

Depending on the folder owner's settings, people can either only preview, read, or collaborate. A Microsoft 365 Office integration ensures that files can be edited simultaneously by multiple users in the web portal. A valid Microsoft 365 license is required. Furthermore, it's possible to share links with expiration dates, and files can be sent directly to contacts via email including an additional authentication step.

Security

FileSync makes no compromises when it comes to security: All uploaded data is encrypted and stored in Switzerland. Data security is a top priority, and users are assured that nobody except themselves (and people with whom folders/documents have been shared) has access to the data. Files are also stored with version control. This means you can access and edit any previous version of the document at any time. Deleted data can also be restored within a period of 30 days.

Partner Hub for Resellers

The platform previously known as 'Partner Portal' is also getting an update. The Partner Portal is now called Partner Hub and represents the central point of connection between Backup ONE, service providers, and resellers. Besides the name, the Partner Hub appears with a fresh look and attractive features:

• Creation of FileSync Teams for customers
• Ability to activate all available Backup ONE solutions as a service provider or reseller and subsequently resell them
• Reports can be downloaded as CSV
• Training can be booked directly from the Partner Hub for yourself or interested customers

Now all information about and from Backup ONE and FileSync is available directly from the Partner Hub. For example, when a new product is launched, it will prominently appear in the Partner Hub, and all relevant information can be viewed and downloaded directly there. If anything is unclear, you can easily and conveniently book a training session with the responsible partner manager or open a support ticket.

Conclusion

The revision of FileSync has been very well received in the market and by existing customers. Customers appreciate the improvements made and the new functionalities. We personally find the M365 integration 2FA capability (via Saml v2) an excellent and convincing security feature. We also really like the team collaboration feature, where you can work simultaneously on M365 documents on the online interface. Overall, we can recommend FileSync to all Swiss SMEs looking for a solid solution that excels in functionality and user-friendliness while being 100% Swiss-made.
