What is a Backup?

The word "backup" comes from English and means "data protection" in German. A backup is therefore the securing of data so that it can be restored in case of data loss, which can result from hardware failure, theft, or damage.

Regular data backup can drastically reduce both financial and often emotional damage when important data is lost.

A backup is a data protection measure, essentially a copy of data on another storage device. This can be an internally installed storage device, an external storage device, or a server accessible via the Internet that serves as the target medium.

Various technologies and methods can be used to create a backup. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Manual copying of data to another storage medium such as external hard drive or USB stick, which is relatively prone to errors.
  • Storing your data with a cloud storage solution like Dropbox, Google Drive or FileSync. In each case, a local copy is created and the data is stored in a second set on the servers of the respective provider. In all mentioned cases, the data is stored outside of Switzerland.
  • Using backup software to create regular backups on removable storage media, such as tape.
  • Using a cloud backup solution, as offered by Backup ONE. Thanks to innovative software, servers and client computers are backed up to the Backup ONE Cloud at freely definable, regular intervals. The data is stored 100% in Switzerland but is available worldwide when needed.

Data is the currency of the future and should be stored with appropriate caution. Besides data protection (who may access which data when, how, and where), data security (where which data is stored and protected against data loss) must not be neglected under any circumstances.
