Backup ONE launches highly secure, geo-redundant Swiss Cloud Storage: The Backup ONE Swiss Cloud is here!

The time has come! After our team has been working on it behind the scenes for the past few months, we can finally present our latest official project: Our new, highly secure, geo-redundant Swiss Storage Cloud!

But let's start from the beginning. After successfully performing data backups for our customers for over five years while continuously increasing data security (integration of anti-malware, integration of antivirus, integration of server-side backup scanning, safe-restore, and much more), we considered how we could take the security, performance, and availability of our storage cloud to the next level. This idea evolved into the project our engineers have been working on for the past few months. The result is impressive, and we are very pleased to present it to you in detail here.

Let's look at the key data:

  • Name: Backup ONE Swiss Cloud
  • 2 new CH data center locations: Zurich and Geneva (ISO 27001, SOC 1 Type II, SOC 2 Type I and other certifications)
    • Geo-redundant data storage: Your backup data is stored geo-redundantly in both data centers.
  • 400+ processor cores
  • 400+ storage drives
  • 384 switch ports at 25Gbit/s each
  • Over 3TB RAM
  • 100% HA: Entire environment built on HA principles (High Availability, meaning the environment can handle the failure of at least half of all systems in the cluster without service interruption. The probability of such a widespread failure is low, very low in fact, because we take Data Protection Excellence seriously.

What does the new Swiss Storage Cloud offer?

2 Data Locations – Double Data Storage of all Customer Data for 2x 99.999999999% Data Security

One storage cluster in Zurich and one in Geneva. Your backup data is now stored at both locations (geo-redundantly). This happens fully automatically in the background and provides doubled data security. Even if one of our data centers goes offline, the other remains accessible with the exact same data set as the primary.

More than Backup Storage: Now also native S3 Storage available!

The new cloud consists of four large server clusters (Cluster: combination of multiple servers/nodes into a unit that provides a service together and self-organizes so that the failure of one or more nodes is not noticeable externally), working in pairs to fulfill different tasks. Two clusters each provide a backup gateway that receives data from all backup agents, processes it, and then writes it to the connected storage cluster.

Our storage clusters have a total capacity of several petabytes of data and, in addition to storing backup data, now also offer interfaces like S3 (Simple Storage Service), which significantly broadens the scope of application. You now have the ability to write data directly to our highly secure storage via S3 protocol.

We provide the S3 protocol and offer shortest latencies and highest performance thanks to powerful hardware in the background. For S3, customers can choose whether data should be stored at one location or both locations. Data storage at a single location already offers highest state-of-the-art security, with two locations the data is stored doubly redundant. Perfect for your important data that you need to access quickly at any time.

For the IT-savvy and all interested parties: How does it work?

Geo-redundancy

Geo-redundancy means that data is stored at more than one geographical location. We implement this by storing the data in both Zurich and Geneva as complete 1:1 copies. Our systems handle this geo-replication fully automatically. For example, when considering a backup agent on a specific workload, it sends the data to our primary data center in Zurich, which is then automatically replicated to Geneva. Each data center site is responsible for protecting its own data.

Erasure Coding

The data isn't simply written to a single drive, but naturally stored multiple times. This is achieved through erasure coding, where additional parity fragments are calculated from the original data, which are then distributed along with the original fragments across multiple servers and drives within the cluster. If a server or drive fails, the original data can be recalculated. This achieves highest data security, as shown by the following information.

Further Investment in Switzerland as a Data Location

We have been 100% committed to Switzerland as a data location from the beginning and are pleased to contribute further to strengthening it through the expansion of our infrastructure here in the country. We believe that your data belongs to you alone, and we ensure this with the latest security technologies. Switzerland as a data location with its legislation helps us to expand this long-term.
