S3cmd Tool Quickstart Guide

The open source tool s3cmd is well known for managing S3 object storage. With s3cmd, you can perform regular S3 operations with ease. In this post, we're going the steps to set up and use s3cmd for your first small tasks.

If you have PIP installed:

pip3 install s3cmd

Alternatively, on macOS just use Homebrew:

brew install s3cmd

and wait a couple of seconds.

Now, we're going to set up the S3 Credentials so that s3cmd can log in an interact with your S3 or S3 Compatible Storage:

s3cmd --configure

This will open the small text-based configurator, where you can set up and test your s3 connection. At the end of the configurator, you can also choose to test the newly set up credentials. Once s3cmd reports a successful connection, we can continue by listing the contents of our namespace.

To list all the buckets:

s3cmd ls

To list all the buckets and Contents of the Buckets

s3cmd la

Create a Bucket

s3cmd mb s3://test-bucket

Put a file in the bucket

touch ~/FILE.txt
s3cmd put ~/FILE.txt s3://test-bucket

Now, with s3cmd la, you will see the File in the Bucket.

So now, let's delete the File again:

s3cmd del s3://test-bucket/FILE.txt
You can also use: s3cmd rm s3://test-bucket/FILE.txt for a more Linux-like approach

But of course, you can also do a lot more with s3cmd.

Here is the output of s3cmd --help:
